The search teams currently working through the wreckage of AirAsia flight 8501 have determined the likely position where the black boxes are in the waters of the Java Sea.

According to USA Today, divers from the naval ship KN Jadayat in Indonesia picked up on the pings from the boxes at around 100 feet beneath the surface of the sea. A statement by Tonny Budiono, who is the team coordinator for the Directorate of Sea Transportation, spoke about the finding and that the boxes were at least 60 feet apart from one another.

Crews on the search team will make an attempt to recover the black boxes on Monday. As previously reported, attempts to retrieve the black boxes have been hampered due to conditions in ocean currents.

It is the hope that finding the boxes, which record data from the cockpit, would allow investigators to determine the cause of the Dec. 28 crash that killed 162 passengers and crew. It is believed that one cause may be related to stormy weather.

However, the chief of Indonesia’s search and rescue agency, Henry Bambang Soelistyo, exercised caution since it isn’t confirmed that the pings are actually from the boxes themselves.

The Associated Press reported that the black boxes could be stuck underneath the wreckage and if divers can’t get it themselves, then the debris from the crash will be lifted in order for successful retrieval.

While some of the victims from the crash have been recovered, others are believed to be still inside the wreckage.
