A Palestinian man has been sentenced to three life terms in the case of three Israeli teens who were abducted and murdered last summer.
NPR reported that the case sparked a search that only enhanced tensions between forces in Israel and Palestinians. Israel made the decision to invade Gaza, culiminated in a war that lasted for 50 days.
According to TIME, Hussam Kawasmeh, who is a member of the group Hamas, had put together the plan to abduct the teens when they were hitchhiking in the West Bank. They were found about three weeks later in a burial site.
Reuters reported the victims were Eyal Yifrach, 19, and two 16-year-olds named Gilad Shaer and Naftali Fraenkel. In addition to Kawasmeh, two operatives also in Hamas were involved in having carried out the murders, but died during a firefight against Israeli forces a month after Kawasmeh was arrested in August.
A revenge attack was carried out after the Israeli teens were murdered when Palestinian teenager Mohammed Khudair was killed in July.
