In some unexpected and disappointing release date news, Ron Howard's In the Heart of the Sea, starring Chris Hemsworth, has been pushed from its March 13 release to December 11, almost nine months from its original premiere.

The Wrap broke the story. Replacing Howard's sea drama is the Liam Neeson-starring action thriller Run All Night, originally slated for an April 17 release. Also slated for release on the 13th is Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension and Disney's Cinderella, according to Variety.

Adapted from Nathaniel Philbrick’s novel of the same name following the doomed voyage of a whaling ship the Essex, attacked by a sperm whale, in 1820, Hemsworth stars alongside Benjamin Walker, Cillian Murphy, Brendan Gleeson and Tom Holland. Ben Whishaw, meanwhile, stars as Herman Melville, the man who retold the tale in his book Moby Dick.

It's unclear at the moment why Warner Bros. delayed the movie, but the release date push towards Oscars season could suggest a boast of confidence in the project, or perhaps some more time to fix up some VFX shots. Hopefully, it's not to rework the movie because it's a complete failure.

While this Hemsworth movie is being delayed, his latest, Michael Mann's Blackhat is still slated to be released this Friday.
