Something that many people do for hours every day and are probably doing right now can actually be killing you, according to a new study.

The study, which was published Tuesday in the Annals of Internal Medicine found that sedentary, even with exercise, can increase the risk of developing heart disease, cancer and diabetes in adults.

“What we didn’t know was whether the sitting time and health relationship was because people were also exercising poorly,” senior author Dr. David Alter of the Toronto Rehabilitation Institute-University Health Network and Institute for Clinical Evaluative Sciences told Reuters.

However, he said that even if people are exercising regularly, they still need to be sitting less.

After analyzing 47 studies of sedentary behavior, researchers concluded that sitting for extended periods of time, increases the risk of developing type 2 diabetes by a staggering 90 percent.

The researchers suggested that those who sit at their job should try and be mindful of how long they are doing so on a daily basis. They also recommend getting up and walking around for a minute or two every so often to reduce sedentary time.
