A suspect has been charged in the killing of a missing Georgia couple last seen leaving their home to look at a car they found on Craigslist.
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported that on Tuesday, a magistrate judge denied bail for the suspect identified as 26-year-old Ronnie “Jay” Towns.
As previously reported, the bodies of two people were found Monday in a wooded area near a pond where the Marietta couple’s car was found partially submerged.
A positive identification concluded that the pair is in fact Elrey “Bud” Runion, 69 and his 66-year-old wife June. They were both shot execution-style in the head with small caliber weapon.
Police said that Towns was the last person to talk to the couple via telephone about them purchasing a car they thought he had in his possession. However, when the Runions met up with him, he did not have the car. Investigators believe Towns allegedly lured the couple to the location in order to rob them.
“We put a lot of effort into finding (the Runions) and we’re hopeful for a successful prosecution,” Telfair County Sheriff Chris Steverson said.
The couple was reported missing by their children last Friday.
