Prince is going to have to ask Taylor Swift for permission if he ever plans on a 1999 prequel. That’s because the “Shake It Off” singer has reportedly trademarked several phrases from her 1989 album, including “Party Like It’s 1989.”
Vox noticed that Swift had filed for trademarks with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. She trademarked the phrase “This Sick Beat,” so if you ever want to use that on a t-shirt or shout it out in public appearances, you need her appearance first. The phrase appears in “Shake It Off.”
According to Rolling Stone, the legal database Justia lists other phrases that Swift now has trademarked. These include “Party Like It’s 1989,” “Cause We Never Go Out Of Style,” “Could Show You Incredible Things” and “Nice To Meet You. Where You Been?”
Swift also has trademarks for her signature and even the “T.S.” logo that appears on the 1989 cover.
It looks like Swift has big plans for these phrases. Aside from usual things like clothing, stickers and stationary, Swift also made sure only she can use “Party Like It’s 1989” on Christmas decorations and sports apparel.
Haters may hate, but Swift will be laughing all the way to the bank.
