So far, the slogan for Terminator: Genisys has been “Everything has changed,” but the more footage Paramount and Skydance release, the more it looks like just another Terminator retread.
That’s the case for the Super Bowl spot, which the studio posted today. In 30 seconds, Paramount tries to jam as many new scenes that should look familiar to audiences as possible, from the liquid metal T-1000 chasing after our heroes to Arnold Schwarzenegger saying, “I’ll be back.”
While Genisys is supposed to be the start of a new trilogy and is built on a unique twist, with Sarah Connor (Emilia Clarke) being raised by an old Terminator, this and previous trailers prove that the outline of James Cameron’s 1985 classic is still there. The first trailer also made that painfully obvious, although scenes of the Future War will definitely look slicker.
The film also stars Jai Courtney as Kyle Reese and Jason Clarke as John Connor. Doctor Who’s Matt Smith also has a role.
Genisys hits theaters on July 1. Alan Taylor directed the film.
