T-Boz and Chilli are going to try to make one final album together as TLC. They are turning to Kickstarter to help fund the project, their first in 13 years.
The group, which hasn’t recorded an album since the tragic death of Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes in 2002, launched a Kickstarter campaign on Monday. After just one day, over 560 fans have donated $61,000. They are trying to raise $150,000 by Feb. 19 and it definitely looks like they will reach that goal.
“We've always been known to do things differently,” T-Boz, born Tionne Watkins, told the Associated Press. “We've always been trailblazers and trendsetters. We've always been outspoken, and this seems like the perfect opportunity.”
While the group is known for hits like “Waterfalls” and “No Scrubs,” they have faced financial trouble in the past, even before 2002. They filed for bankruptcy in 1996.
“People may say, 'Hey, you are celebrities. Why can't you just pay for it yourself?’” Chilli, born Rozonda Thomas, said. “But it doesn't work that way. There's a lot that goes into it. We want to bring our fans into the process and see how it's done.”
The Kickstarter campaign will also give the group more creative control over the album. They have already started writing new material.
TLC is offering rewards for donations. If you donate just $5, in addition to behind-the-scenes updates, you will receive a special exclusive remixed track. For $15, you get a downloadable version of the album.
Chilli and T-Boz are also heading out on tour. Today, they announced that they will hit the road with New Kids on the Block and Nelly.
