Nearly every day is some kind of a holiday, but today’s is very special. Jan. 21 marks National Hug Day, which is a great reason to give someone a nice warm hug.
Kevin Zaborney, the Ambassador of Hugs and the creator of National Hugging Day, marks the holiday by been handing out the Most Huggable Character award each year. This year’s winner is Baymax, the fluffy white robot in Disney’s animated hit Big Hero 6.
The fictional character attributed his win to his “non-threatening, huggable design” and hopes to deliver and receive more hugs throughout 2015.
Baymax is the first time a fictional character has received the award. Previous winners have included the late comedian Joan Rivers; Josh Ondash, who broke the record for the most hugs given in 24 hours in 2013; and Mata Amritanandamayi of India, who is known as the Hugging Saint.
Rev. Zabourney of Washington first celebrated the holiday in 1986 and it is recognized by the U.S. Copyright Office.
As for Big Hero 6, it hits DVD and Blu-ray on Feb. 24. The film has grossed $428.8 million worldwide.
