Viola Davis has pretty much confirmed that she is being considered to play Amanda Waller in Warner Bros. and DC Comics’ cinematic universe. The character would make her debut in David Ayer’s Suicide Squad.
This is an important role, similar to Nick Fury in the Marvel movies. She’s the one who hands out the missions to the Suicide Squad, a group of villains who take on incredibly dangerous missions for the government.
Back in December, Latino Review reported that Davis got the role already. Now, TheWrap is reporting that she is very close to signing a multi-picture deal with Warner Bros.
Davis did speak with Nerd Report earlier this week and confirmed that she’s making some scheduling moves to make sure she can do it. She is still attached to ABC’s How To Get Away With Murder, which was one of the most successful new shows of Fall 2014 and will likely get renewed.
“I’ve read up about her but I’m working out my schedule for Suicide Squad,” Davis told Nerd Report. “I’m fascinated by her. I’m fascinated by her in this world of superhero-ness because she is not a woman that you would expect. I think that she is a massive contradiction. She’s this big powerful black woman, hard, ready to pick up a gun and shoot anyone at will. I’m fascinated in exploring her psychology, just put it that way. And I’m excited to pick up a gun.”
Davis, who stars in Michael Mann’s Blackhat, would appear alongside a talented roster of stars Warner Bros. has put together for the all-villain Suicide Squad movie. Last month, Will Smith, Margot Robbie, Jared Leto, Tom Hardy and Cara Delevingne were all officially signed to the project. There were rumors that Oprah Winfrey was on the shortlist for the Amanda Waller role, but obviously that didn’t work out.
Suicide Squad hits theaters on Aug. 5, 2016.
