On Tuesday, Alaska joined Colorado and Washington as the third U.S. state to legalize recreational marijuana use.
CNN noted that the legal use is only for persons 21 and over and there are limitations to the law, just as there are in the other states that have legalized it.
Users are not permitted to operate a motor vehicle while they are high and cannot carry more than one ounce on them or have more than four ounces in their home. And, smoking weed in public is still illegal after a 53-47 vote last November for adults to use marijuana only in private places.
The Associated Press reported that police in the city of Anchorage said that they will begin handing out fines immediately to anyone who violates those laws.
Still many marijuana supporters were looking for a big celebration at an event in the downtown area. However, since the officer’s warnings and fear of being fined, organizers decided it would be wise to keep the event low-key and not smoke any cannabis in public.
