Closer Aroldis Chapman agreed to a deal with the Cincinnati Reds on Friday, avoiding arbitration.
According to the Associated Press, the deal is for one-year and $8.05 million.This year was the second time that Chapman was eligible for arbitration. He was first eligible for arbitration last year. Last year Chapman made $5,025,000 and asked for $8.7 million. The Reds offered him $6.65 million. He can earn award bonuses under the deal.
Chapman has been with the Reds for five years. He is a three-time All-Star. Last year he had 36 saves and 106 strikeouts as he went 0-3 with a 2.00 ERA, according to ESPN.He became the first pitcher ever to average 100 mph with his fastball. In his five seasons Chapman has 113 saves and 430 strikeouts.
Chapman is eligible for free agency after the 2016 season. Earlier this week the Reds reached a deal with third baseman Todd Frazier, avoiding arbitration. Frazier’s deal is for two years and $12 million.
