After Birdman finished off its surprising guild sweep, Richard Linklater’s Boyhood got a much-needed comeback in London on Sunday. The film took home the top prize at the British Academy of Film & Television Arts awards.
Since the BAFTAs became a pre-Oscars ceremony, winning Best Film there has been a key step to winning the Best Picture Oscar. You have to go back to 2008, when Atonement beat No Country For Old Men, for the last time the BAFTA and Oscar didn’t match.
Boyhood also got a much-needed win for Best Director. Linklater surprisingly lost the Director’s Guild award on Saturday to Birdman’s Alejandro G. Inarritu. Unfortunately for Linklater, the DGA is a better predictor for the Best Director Oscar than the BAFTA.
The BAFTAs did shore up this year’s acting winners, meaning that the Oscars will probably be without drama there. Once again, Patricia Arquette (Boyhood), J.K. Simmons (Whiplash), Julianne Moore (Still Alice) and Eddie Redmayne (The Theory of Everything) all won.
However, the big winner on the night was Wes Anderson’s The Grand Budapest Hotel. The film finished with wins for Original Score, Original Screenplay, Costume Design, Make-Up/Hair and Production Design. Expect the film to have the same kind of dominance in the tech categories at the Oscars.
Birdman only won one award - Cinematography. The Imitation Game was completely shut out.
