Universal released the first image from the live-action Jem and the Holograms movie this week, and it looks just as outrageous as any film adaptation of the ‘80s animated series should be.

The image, which Universal shared with Variety, shows Aubrey Peeples rocking it out on guitar. Stephanie Scott, Hayley Kiyoko and Aurora Perrineau play the other members of the band.

Universal also finally shared the official synopsis for the movie. Writer Ryan Landels brings the story of Jem up to date, with the film tracing her rise from underground video star to global music icon. In the film, “four aspiring musicians will take the world by storm when they see that the key to creating your own destiny lies in finding your own voice,” the studio said.

Jem has certainly come together quickly. The project was only announced in March 2014, with Jason Blum, who is better known for his micro-budget horror movies, set to produce and Jon M. Chu directing. Hasbro Studios is co-producing.

The cast also includes Juliette Lewis, Molly Ringwald and Ryan Guzman. It hits theaters on Oct. 23.
