The U.S. Coast guard pulled a dog from the cold waters of a Michigan waterway Tuesday and the final moments of the dramatic rescue were captured on video.
The Grand Rapids Press reported that Coast Guard personnel actually saw the Labrador jump into the waterway between Lake Michigan and Betsie Lake, just outside the Frankfort Coast Guard station.
Petty Officer Tim Putnam told ABC News that when they saw the pooch dive in, they immediately sprung into action and rushed to get into their dry suits.
He added that the 20-minute rescue was not easy and “exhausting.”
"There were a lot of heavy chunks and plates of ice I had to move around to get to the dog, who seemed shook up and shivering," Putman said.
Once the boatswain mate secured the canine, both he and the dog were pulled back to the shore with a rope.
The pup, who officials later found out is named Bailey, was transported to the county animal shelter to be examined and treated.
Authorities were also able to track down Bailey’s owner who said the dog disappeared earlier that morning.
Bailey is said to have traveled about eight miles to the lake.
