A defense lawyer for the 19-year-old suspect taken into custody last week has said that the fatal shooting of a Las Vegas mother was not motivated by road rage.

The Associated Press noted that while attorney Conrad Claus did not say what the defense for his client will be, he did say that the case has been “mischaracterized” as road rage.

Claus’ comment contradicts what authorities have said all along about believing that the shooting was sparked as a result of road rage.

As previously reported, police arrested Erich Milton Nowsch Jr. on Thursday for the fatal shooting of Tammy Meyers.

On Monday, Nowsh’s appeared in court for the first time. He is set to appear again on March 10. He is being held for murder and attempted murder, among other charges.

Meyers’ husband was present in the courtroom, but did not comment as he left.

The family and the suspect did not live far from each other and reportedly knew one another.

The 44-year-old woman was gunned down outside her home on Feb. 12 and died at a hospital the following Saturday.
