Although Tom Ford is best known for his fashion career, he also hosts a profession as a filmmaker, being the director behind the excellent 2009 film A Single Man, best known for Colin Firth's Oscar-nominated performance. While Ford has yet to make a follow-up to his directorial debut, it appears Ford got a project in the works now. And its one that sounds pretty ambitious.
Chatting with Women's Wear Daily, Ford revealed he's in the early stages of casting his second feature, a thriller that's an adaption of a novel he refuses to name. He admits, though, it's not a well-known book and he changed the name. One would think, because of this, that it deviates from the property. They would be both right and wrong in their thinking.
Based on a screenplay he wrote back in September, he plans to make the movie in two-parts, the first faithful to the original material and the other completely different. He hopes to start production later this year, ideally between Sept. 15 and December where's there's a window between his fashion schedule.
"I only need six weeks," Ford admits in terms of production. He believes the editing process will be much more flexible to his schedule. As A Single Man was primarily shot and financed through him anyway in 21 days, he thinks this can be feasible, even with the multiple features he's producing through this property.
As for why he wants to make the film this way, Ford notes “A book is a book; a film is a film. They are totally different things. Sometimes things are subtle in a book because there’s an inner monologue with the character, and turning it into a film, you don’t have that inner monologue — unless you do, which I don’t love."
"You have to have something personal; you have to take what speaks to you about a book and amplify that," he continued. "It’s impressionism, in a way.”
For the moment, he juggles the early stages of this film with his Los Angeles fall fashion show, which commences on February 20 during LA Fashion Week.
At one point in time, as The Playlist notes, Ford planned to follow-up A Single Man with a comedy that was "ready to go" in 2011. Clearly something happened between then and now, but it looks like Ford hasn't given up filmmaking. Though, as he notes, he'd like do more of it had he more time.
"I would go crazy sitting around waiting for this movie to be made if it was the only thing I had going on,” he said. “I guess if I were in Hollywood making movies, I might be making more of them.”
