While American Monopoly sets are filled with boring fake money, if you are lucky to buy the right sets in France, you might wind up with real money.
To mark the iconic game’s launch in France 80 years ago, at least 80 sets will feature real money. According to the AFP, Hasbro France is making one grand prize set with only real money, which amounts to 20,580 euros ($23,268).
Ten other sets will include five 20-euro notes, two 50-euro notes and one 100-euro note. Smaller prizes will be included in 69 other sets.
“We wanted to do something unique,” Florence Gaillard, brand manager at Hasbro France, told the AFP. “When we asked our French customers, they told us they wanted to find real money in their Monopoly boxes.”
Hasbro France pulled off the operation in complete secret, putting the sets together in the southeastern town Creutzwald. They were shipped from there on Monday.
That’s certainly an exciting way to celebrate the game’s big anniversary. As the Washington Post notes, the only thing Hasbro plans to do in the U.S. is release a vintage-style board.
