Donations have poured in and far exceeded the goal to get a Detroit man, who hiked 21 miles to work, a car.

As the Detroit Free Press reported, last week James Robertson, 56, received national attention for his 21-mile journey in which he walked to his factory job in Rochester Hills.

Several people who heard Robertson’s story wanted to help out. The original goal was to get $5,000 for some new wheels, but thanks to an online fundraiser he actually received $350,000.

The GoFundMe account was started by a student at Wayne University. In addition, to the generous donations made online, a local dealership donated Robertson’s favorite car, a 2015 Ford Taurus.

Robertson explained why a he wanted a Taurus.

"It's like me: simple on the outside, strong on the inside," he said.

After appearing in newspapers and on T.V., Robertson become a local celebrity in Detroit.

During a casino trip, Robertson said that people recognized him and wanted to get their pictures taken with him.

Robertson is going to be coached by financial advisers on how to take care of his newfound fortune and how to spend it wisely.
