Guillermo del Toro is a man who very well never sleeps. He constantly is working, whether as a writer, director, producer or show developer, and based on the creepy things released from his head in this first trailer for his latest, Crimson Peak, it's not hard to see why he's kept awake at night.
The trailer, via Variety, fits well into del Toro's body of work. The art direction is sensational, the atmosphere is appropriately spooky and there's a continuous momentum in the footage's flow. Plus Jessica Chastain looks like she's having a ball here, and likely will churn out another memorable and impressive performance.
With its horror theme and its clear R-rating, Crimson Peak is meant to evoke the sensationalism and aesthetics of del Toro's past works, like The Devil's Backbone. This is the filmmaker's first R-rated feature since 2006's Pan's Labyrinth, which many still consider the filmmaker's masterpiece. While the trailer prematurely calls this del Toro's "ultimate masterpiece," at least the studioheads — in this case, Universal and Legendary —
are happy with the finished project.
In addition to Chastain, Mia Wasikowska, Tom Hiddleston and Charlie Hunnam, who previously lead del Toro's last film Pacific Rim, star in this Victorian-era tale of a woman (Wasikowska) who falls in love with a mysterious stranger (Hiddleston) to the point where she moves in with the man and his crazed sister (Chastain) in a house with its own haunted history.
Crimson Peak creeps its way into theaters on October 16, 2015. del Toro, never a man who sit down and take a breather, is already hard at work on pre-production for Pacific Rim 2 and also is working on the new Amazon pilot Carnival Row.
