Katy Perry’s lawyers have jumped the shark. They are suing a 3D sculpture artist for trying to sell a sculpture based on the out-of-sync Left Shark from Perry’s Super Bowl XLIX halftime show.
Since the shark became an Internet meme and even got a spot on the Late Late Show with John Mayer, sculptor Fernando Sosa decided to make a Left Shark figure and put it up for sale. Sosa has made a name for himself by making sculptures of political figures and hasn’t had any problem from them, so he thought there wouldn’t be a problem making a shark figure.
Soon after he started selling the figure for $24.99 each, he received a letter from Perry’s attorneys at Greenberg Taurig to have him pull it from the Shapeways.com site. Sosa posted the cease and desist letter on Instagram and a rep from the law offices told CNN it was real. The letter notes that Perry is the owner of the “intellectual property” Sosa depicted.
“Well, it looks like dictators and world leaders like Putin and Kim Jong Un or Chris Christie are much easier to deal with,” Sosa told CNN. “So I probably will go back to doing pieces about them and other world leaders. All this lawyer crap is very stressful.”
Sosa also made figures of Tom Brady and Marshawn Lynch, so he should probably watch out for a letter from the NFL, too.
