Kodi Smit-McPhee, a young actor on the rise after roles in The Road, Let Me In and last year's Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, may very well have picked his most high profile role to date. He'll join Bryan Singer's upcoming X-Men: Apocalypse as Nightcrawler, a role previously, and only, played by Alan Cumming in 2003's X2: X-Men United.

The casting announcement came from Singer's Instagram, when he sent an enthusiastic post Tuesday night announcing the news.

Smit-McPhee joins young fellow actors Sophie Turner, Tye Sheridan and Alexandra Shipp, who joined last month as younger versions of Jean Grey, Cyclops and Storm, as well as fellow X-Men newcomer Oscar Isaac, who plays the titular villain. Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, Nicholas Hoult, Hugh Jackman, James McAvoy and Rose Byrne also join the movie in the roles they've previously played in the series.

Nightcrawler is often considered an passionate member of the X-Men, so it's very likely he'll play a big role in the new film. Although, because he's more of a father figure than a key regular player, it'll be interesting to see where they go with a younger version of the character.

Production on the film begins this spring in Canada. It comes to theaters on May 27, 2016. He was recently seen in Sundance in Slow West with his now X-Men co-star Fassbender.
