A Beagle might be Best in Show, but the Labrador Retriever is still the favorite dog breed among U.S. dog lovers.
The American Kennel Club announced today that the Lab has notched its 24th consecutive year at the top of the Most Popular Breeds list, extending the longest streak at the top in history.
The German Shepherd came in second place, ahead of the Golden Retriever. However, the AKC noted that the biggest jump came for the Bulldog, which landed at No. 4 on the list. They note that Bulldogs are known for building strong bonds with children.
“The Lab truly is America’s dog,” AKC VP Gina DiNardo said in a statement. “But the lovable Bulldog breeds are clamoring to dominate. Watch out for an upset next year.”
For the first time in 100 years, the list includes the French Bulldog, which came in at No. 9. And while Dachshunds are absolutely adorable, they are out of the Top 10 for the first time since 1985.
The Beagle came in No. 5, just after Miss P won the Westminster Kennel Club Dog show earlier this month.
