It's odd to think one Academy Award-nominee will lead an upcoming film adaptation of the video game Assassin's Creed, but it's even weirder to imagine an Oscar-winner joining his side.
Sure enough, however, Marion Cotillard, the Academy Award-winning actress up for another Oscar this year for Two Days, One Night, reunites with Michael Fassbender to play the female lead in the new feature.
The surprising casting choice news comes from Deadline. Her role in the upcoming New Regency/Ubisoft production is kept under wraps at the moment. She and Fassbender already worked together on the upcoming Macbeth, set to be released later this year under the Weinstein Company banner.
Directed by Justin Kurzel, with a screenplay by Bill Collage, Adam Cooper and Michael Lesslie, Assassin's Creed hopes to be not only the first good movie based on a video game, but a viable franchise for the studio and a continuous vehicle for Fassbender, who also produces this adaptation. Production on the film begins this fall, with a December 21, 2016 release slated from 20th Century Fox.
In addition to this adaptation, Ubisoft/Regency also have an Splinter Cell adaptation in the works, with Tom Hardy lined up to star and Doug Liman (Edge of Tomorrow) to direct.
In addition to being seen in Macbeth later this year, Cotillard will also be heard in The Little Prince film adaptation and A Rigged World.
