This is just terrible news for any woman who is currently going through or has yet to go through menopause. A new study has found that the hot flashes associated with it can last for more than a decade.
According to a study published Monday in JAMA Internal Medicine, one of the most miserable parts of aging for females just got more miserable. The data complied found that hot flashes can last up to 14 years.
NBC News noted that the study had more than 1, 400 participants and on average the hot flashes and nighttime sweats lasted just over seven years. However, for some other woman, the discomfort lasted for 14 years.
"This study suggests that very short-term treatment may not control women's hot flashes and night sweats for their total duration," said Dr. JoAnn Manson of Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston.
The study also revealed some differences between women of certain races and ethnicities.
For example, African-American women had the longest-lasting hot-flashes with a median of 10.1 years, which is almost double the number of years for Asian women. The median number of years for Hispanic women was 8.9 and 6.5 for white women.
Oh, the joys of aging.
