A man in Missouri was put to death early Wednesday morning for a more than two-decade old brutal murder he was convicted of committing.

The Associated Press reported that Walter Timothy Storey was executed for the slaying of special education teacher Jill Frey, 36, outside of St. Louis. The execution was marked the first of 2015 for the state.

In February 1990, Storey was said to be distraught and angry about his divorce and was drinking beer. When he ran out he broke into Frey’s apartment to steal cash for more alcohol. The two began to struggle and Storey beat the victim and slit her throat so forcefully and violently that her spine was actually damaged.

KTVI noted that after exhausting all his appeals, the convicted murderer requested clemency from Missouri Governor Jay Nixon. However, that request was denied and he was out to death around midnight.

Some of Frey’s close relatives said that they would attend and witness Storey’s execution. Her mother and father both passed away while he sat on death row for gruesome killing of their daughter.
