The project, simply titled Snowden, will get an awards-friendly Christmas Day release. The film stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt as the title character, who leaked documents revealing the secret programs run by the National Security Agency.

Other stars in the film include Shailene Woodley, Melissa Leo, Zachary Quinto, Tom Wilkinson, Rhys Ifans, Timothy Olyphant and Joely Richardson.

Production will start in Munich in May. Stone will film on location around the world.
