Oliver Stone’s Snowden will get a Christmas release in the U.S.
Variety broke the news of the biopic’s release. Open Road is handling U.S. sales while Wild Bunch will manage sales internationally.
Snowden will follow the titular whistleblower Edward Snowden in his endeavor to leak secrets about the National Security Agency. Snowden was charged with violating the Espionage Act in 2013 and had his passport revoked. Last year, he gained temporary asylum status in Russia.
Stone co-wrote the film with Kieran Fitzgerald. The script is largely based off of Time of the Octopus by Snowden’s Russian lawyer Anatoly Kucherena and The Snowden Files: The Inside Story of the World’s Most Wanted Man by journalist Luke Harding.
Joseph Gordon-Levitt leads the cast as Snowden. The rest of the cast is filled out by Shailene Woodley, Tom Wilkinson, Melissa Leo and Zachary Quinto. Joely Richardson, Timothy Olyphant and Rhys Ifans have also come aboard during the past week.
The film recently began shooting in Munich and will continue until the middle of May.
