Walt Disney Pictures said overnight that the fifth movie in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, Dead Men Tell No Tales, has officially started production in Australia. The studio also confirmed who Johnny Depp’s supporting stars are.
Dead Men Tell No Tales will be a completely new Captain Jack Sparrow (Depp) adventure. He has to face off against Captain Salazar, played Oscar winner Javier Bardem, and an evil ghost pirate army that escaped from the Devil’s Triangle. They want to kill every other pirate, including Jack. The only way Jack can possibly stop them is by finding the Trident of Poseidon to have complete control of the seas.
The rest of the cast features Brenton Thwaites (The Giver), Kaya Scodelario (The Maze Runner) and Golshifteh Farahani (Body of Lies).
Depp will be joined by a few familiar faces from the past Pirates movies, including Geoffrey Rush, Kevin R. McNally and Stephen Graham.
Joachim Ronning and Epsen Sandberg, the team behind the Oscar-nominated Kon Tiki, are directing, with a script by Jeff Nathanson. Jerry Bruckheimer is producing once again.
The film is scheduled for release on July 7, 2017 and is the first film in the franchise since 2011’s On Stranger Tides.
