New details have emerged regarding Thursday’s murder-suicide shooting at the University of South Carolina.
The Associated Press has noted that authorities said anatomy and physiology professor Raja Fayad, 45, was shot several times in the upper body. The other deceased person’s name has not been released at this time, but officials said that Fayad and the woman had a long-term relationship.
As previously reported, the shooting took place around 1 p.m. in the Arnold School of Public Health building on the university’s campus. Both people were found dead there and police later said they believed the shooting was a murder-suicide.
State Law Enforcement Division spokesman Thom Berry said a handgun was found near the bodies and the magazine was empty.
Although police suspected from the start that this was an isolated incident, the school was still placed on lockdown and students were notified about the happenings through an emergency alert system.
The late professor seemed to be well liked judging by what was written about him on a website where students rate their instructors.
