Buddy comedies are a dime-a-dozen in Hollywood, but that won't stop Warner Bros.' from grabbing Sofia Vergara and this year's Oscar-nominee Reese Witherspoon together to star in the new action comedy Hot Pursuit.
The trailer, via CBR Trailers, finds Witherspoon as your average, by-the-books cop who must track and protect the sexy and outgoing widow (Vergara) of a former drug boss. It also stars Mike Birbiglia, John Caroll Lynch and Jim Gaffigan.
The new Warner Bros. feature is directed by Anne Fletcher (The Proposal) and written by sitcom writers David Feeney and John Quiantance and, quite frankly, it looks about what you would expect from basic cable writers these days. All the jokes in the trailer — save for one mildly amusing note from Gaffigan halfway through — fall flat, and these stale jokes don't make the seemingly static chemistry between the leads any more manageable. Also, let's not even get started on Witherspoon's tepid country accent.
This movie looks like a relic from the past — the kind of cheesy, flat comedy popularized in the mid-90s. At best, it'll be a forgettable time out at the movies. At worst, we have an early contender for the worst of the year list. My feelings lie firmly in the latter category. In case you forget, Witherspoon is up for an Oscar for her lead work in Wild.
