The 57th Annual Grammy Awards were handed out Sunday night at the Staples Center, with Sam Smith and - surprisingly - Beck taking home the major awards. Beck managed to come out on top in a stacked category for Album of the Year.

Smith was this year’s New Artist darling, which was made obvious right off the bat. He won the first award handed out during the ceremony, Best New Artist. His hit “Stay With Me” won both Record of the Year and Song of the Year. His album, In The Lonely Hour, took home Best Pop Vocal Album.

Beck’s Morning Phase won Album of the Year, but it was definitely a surprise. His competition included Beyonce’s self-titled album, Ed Sheeran’s X, Smith’s album and Pharrell Williams’ GIRL. Morning Phase also won Best Rock Album and Best Engineered Album, Non-Classical. However, Beck’s “Blue Moon” lost Best Rock Song to Paramore’s “Ain’t It Fun" and Best Rock Performance to Jack White's "Lazaretto."

Beyonce did not go home empty-handed, of course. “Drunk in Love” won Best R&B Performance and Best R&B Song. Beyonce also won Best Surround Sound Album.

As for Pharrell, GIRL won Best Urban Contemporary Album and “Happy” won Best Music Video. “Happy (Live)” won Best Pop Solo Performance.
