The Oscar-nominated film Selma took home top honors at the NAACP Image Awards on Friday.
The Associated Press reports that the movie about the march led by Dr. Martin Luther King for equal voting rights was awarded Outstanding Motion Picture. David Oyelowo, who portrayed Dr. King, was also named the most Outstanding Actor in a Motion Picture. Common and Carmen Ejogo took home the supporting actor and actress prizes respectively.
"This is more than a movie," Oprah Winfrey, who was a "Selma" producer and appeared in it, said Friday. "It's important that we all know who we are so we know where we're going, and claiming the glory."
Despite being nominated for Best Picture and Best Original Song for this year's Academy Awards, many have felt the film was snubbed in a number of other categories in favor of white actors. Host Anthony Anderson addressed the controversy by acknowledging that blacks have their own award show to recognize their achievements in film and telivision.
Vibe reports that Anderson's show Black-ish was also among the top winners, taking home the awards for Outstanding Comedy Series, Outstanding Actor in a Comedy Series, and Outstanding Supporting Actor and Actress.
