When one thinks of Sesame Street, existential crisis and one's sense of worth typically are not brought into question. That may change, however, when the beloved puppet series tackles potential Best Picture-winner Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance).
Titled Big Birdman: The Unexpected Virtue of Orange Pants, this cheeky parody, via Mashable Watercooler, showcases Caroll Spinney, the man behind the Big Bird costume, as he weighs in on his stakes in the series. Asking himself "How did we get here," he is followed by the voice and embodiment of his beloved creature, giving him motivation to pursue his legacy through the great times they've had together.
Those familiar with the acclaimed film should recognize the tongue-in-cheek similarities here, from the one-take, free-flowing feeling to the percussion score to even suggesting they should have done a Raymond Carver play. Naturally, the creators say room for more than two giant bird character following their players.
This doesn't change the stakes of the awards, but it's an unexpected and fun farce on something their target audience shouldn't be too familiar with, at least one would hope. Whether or not Birdman takes home the prize this Sunday over Boyhood, at least director Alejandro González Iñárritu knows he has the support of the lovable PBS program by his side.
Although, if Sesame Street was to tackle one Best Picture nominee, you'd think initially it would be Boyhood. Seems almost perfect, but as it turns out Birdman may be the best one to poke fun of, incorporating one of the show's most beloved characters in on the fun.
