Disney CEO Bob Iger gave an update on the eventual Star Wars theme park rides, suggesting that the company will unveil its plans before the end of the year.
After the Walt Disney Company posted astonishing revenue gains in its first quarter of fiscal 2015, Iger had much to boast about during his call with analysts. He teased a potential Disney-branded streaming service and also noted how successful Frozen has been.
When it comes to Star Wars, Iger didn’t have much to say that isn’t already known. Back in December, he said that new Star Wars theme park rides are in the works, but will focus on the new characters in the upcoming films, not the old ones.
On Tuesday, he said that Disney Imagineers have “ambitious” plans for Star Wars attractions, notes Variety. He stressed that these will take a long time to build, but assured fans that the plans will be unveiled “later in 2015.”
“Fairly soon, I’m sure we’ll be ready to go public with some specifics,” he told Bloomberg. “But it’s safe to say that you’ll see a lot more ‘Star Wars’ at Disney and at Disney parks in the near future.”
It is interesting that Iger is more interested in mining new characters for content, rather than the beloved characters everyone knows. He did reportedly say last month that the stand-alone films would be based on the new characters.
Still, there’s some hope that Felicity Jones might be playing a young Princess Leia in Gareth Edwards’ 2016 film. That could be a problem though, since Leia was supposed to be 18 at the start of Star Wars: A New Hope and Jones is 31.
