There are so many rumors about the future of the Star Wars franchise that it's getting pretty hard to keep track of all of them. Now we have our latest one about the potential casting of young Han Solo.
The latest rumor, according to The Daily Mail, is that Taron-Egerton is in talks to play young Han Solo in the second Star Wars spinoff. Egerton recently starred in Kingsman: The Secret Service alongside Colin Firth.
First of all, it should be noted that even the idea that Han Solo will appear in a Star Wars spinoff at all is also a rumor. All we know so far is that after The Force Awakens, there will be a Star Wars spinoff released in 2016 directed by Gareth Edwards, and another spinoff released in 2018.
The current thinking is that this first movie will be about a group of bounty hunters who go on a mission to steal the plans for the Death Star, according to Slashfilm. The Theory of Everything star Felicity Jones is reportedly in talks for that movie, as we previously reported.
The report now is that the second spinoff movie, to be released in 2018, will show a young Han Solo and reveal how he got the Millennium Falcon. It may also reveal how he fell out of favor with Jabba the Hutt.
Mark Millar, author of the comic book upon which Kingsman: The Secret Service is based, sent this tweet in regards to the rumor, referencing the infamous "Han shot first" debate that arose out of the Star Wars special editions. Millar is probably responding to the rumors he's hearing just as we are, though, and it's pretty doubtful he'd actually have inside knowledge about this.
So to summarize, there's a Star Wars spinoff coming out next year. It might be about a group of bounty hunters and it might star Felicity Jones. Then there's another spinoff in 2018 which might feature a young Han Solo, and Taron Egerton might be in consideration for the role. That's a whole lot of mights, and there have definitely been a bunch of Star Wars rumors that seem to be fake for sure. Then again, director J.J. Abrams recently said some of the rumors are actually true, so we just can't resist speculating on all of these.
Would Egerton be a good choice for Solo? Probably. He's pretty great in Kingsman: The Secret Service, and by the last act of that movie we can definitely see him as filling a Han Solo-type role. He's also a bit of a lesser-known actor, which is definitely preferable for something like this. It would be pretty distracting to have a more famous actor, like, for example, Chris Pratt playing young Han Solo.
The big question, though, is do we actually want to see young Solo? As iconic as that character is, there's something to be said for leaving the original trilogy alone and focusing on some new adventures. Why not have the movie star a bunch of characters we've never heard of before? Haven't we seen enough of Han Solo?
