We're nearly reaching the end of this year's road to the Oscars, and at last night's Writers Guild Awards The Grand Budapest Hotel and The Imitation Game took home the top prizes.

Wes Anderson's film The Grand Budapest Hotel won the night's biggest award of original screenplay, beating out Boyhood, Foxcatcher, Nightcrawler and Whiplash, according to Entertainment Weekly

The Imitation Game also won for best adapted screenplay over American Sniper, Gone Girl, Guardians of the Galaxy and Wild. In his acceptance speech, Graham Moore said that they made the film for Alan Turing. "It is on the shoulders of his genius that we made this film," he said.

Notably missing from the night was Oscar front-runner Birdman, which would have been in the category of best original screenplay but was ineligible because the writers are not WGA members. The Theory of Everything was also not nominated in best adapted screenplay for the same reason.

So can we make any conclusions about the Academy Awards based on these WGA winners? The winner of the WGA awards very frequently also wins the corresponding screenplay award at the Oscars. For original screenplay, the WGAs and the Oscars have lined up 14 times in the past two decades, and they've lined up 13 times for adapted screenplay, according to Variety.

However, Birdman is a serious contender to beat The Imitation Game for adapted screenplay at the Oscars, even though it wasn't eligible at the WGAs. Last year Captain Phillips won the award at the WGAs while 12 Years a Slave, which was also ineligible, took the Oscar, so history may repeat itself this year.

True Detective won two of the top TV awards, taking home the award for best drama series and best new series. It beat out some major contenders in Game of Thrones, The Good Wife, House of Cards and Mad Men.
Louis C.K.'s series Louie won for best comedy series, and the show also won best episodic comedy for its season 4 episode “So Did the Fat Lady."

John Oliver was also a major winner, receiving the award for best comedy/variety series after only one season, beating out shows like The Daily Show, The Colbert Report and Saturday Night Live.

Going into the Academy Awards next week, The Grand Budapest Hotel is definitely a major contender, while Birdman could still win big even though it wasn't present last night.

The 87th annual Academy Awards will air on Feb. 22.
