While writers/director Phil Lord and Chris Miller created an immensely beloved feature with The Lego Movie, the 21/22 Jump Street filmmakers have stepped down from the directors' chairs for its sequel, literally titled The Lego Movie Sequel. A replacement has been found, however.
Rob Schrab, a TV director who worked on shows like Community, Childrens Hospital and The Mindy Project to name a few, took over directing duties for the sequel, according to The Hollywood Reporter. While Chris McKay, who helped direct the first Lego Movie, was initially set to direct the sequel, he's directing the spin-off Lego Batman, set to hit theaters on May 2017.
Not much is known about the story of The Lego Movie Sequel, other than it takes four years later. The big reason for this is to make sure it fits the age of child actor Jadon Sand, who played a pretty pivotal role in the original film. They revealed these details to CominSoon.net while promoting their new Fox sitcom Last Man on Earth. Although Miller and Lord work on the story for the new film alongside Jared Stern and Michelle Morgan, they are cautious to spill any more details.
In addition to these other two Lego Movie-inspired films in the works, Warner Bros. also has a Ninjago spin-off set to hit theaters next year. The Lego Movie Sequel has yet to announce its official release date, but comes around 2018.
