Authorities in Massachusetts are investigating the death of a toddler who died while undergoing a head lice treatment.
Reuters noted that a spokesman for the Springfield Police Department said the parents of the 18-month old used a home remedy that included mayonnaise and a plastic bag to treat the lice. When they put her down to sleep on Friday evening, the plastic bag, at some point, apparently went over the little girl’s face and suffocated her.
"This is a very sad incident," Sgt. John Delaney said.
When officers arrived at the home they found an adult administering CPR. However, Delaney said that medical officials concluded the child had already been dead for quite a while.
The Associated Press reported that no charges have been filed against the parents at this time. However, the death is still being investigation by police and the state Department of Children and Families.
Health professionals say there is little evidence that using mayonnaise as treatment for head lice actually works. Many effective home-care treatments can be purchased over the counter.
