Criminal Minds this week focused on the topic of domestic violence, which is a difficult issue for many and as a note, some of the videos this week will depict mentions of it. In this episode, a man named Peter Folkmore targets women who are in situations of domestic violence and who he feels did not fight back hard enough. This stems from childhood trauma associated with his own experience with his parents.

While the case was going on, we got to meet Kate Callahan’s husband, Chris, as they got ready to deal with Meg going on a date at the mall with her friend and some boys. What they don’t know is that Meg and her friend are actually meeting a boy they met online. But, if you recall from a previous episode, that situation is not what it seems, making my heart jump in my throat more than once during this episode.

For an episode that dealt with a painful topic, it was well-done and we got to see a new view of our newest team member. So far, I think she has fit in well with the BAU and I’m looking forward to see what happens during the next few weeks, especially considering what is going on with her niece. Let’s take a look at some of the ten moments that got our hearts in our throat during this episode.

10. The case

When the episode begins, we see the unsub meticulously walk around his home with music playing. He goes downstairs where a woman is in a chair, bound and gagged. This is when he appears to begin reciting lines and when she gets it wrong, he loses his temper.

9. Meeting Kate’s family

Kate’s husband is introduced in this episode. We find out that their niece, Meg, is going on a date with her best friend and some boys. A silly moment erupts when Chris mentions that Kate has two weapons and after Meg leaves, Kate reminds him she has three.

8. New victim

The new victim is this case is a woman named Greta, who goes to a women’s shelter for help after her son, Conner, sees her husband strike her. This is when we see that the unsub works at the facility and has his sights sets on her.

The police officer

The team discovers that years earlier, a woman would make trips to the ER claiming she had numerous accidents and the same woman was eventually killed when her husband slit her throat and then killed himself in front of their son. The officer who responded had come to all the incidents and had given the young boy a tape recorder so he could finally catch his dad in the act. The team also realizes they can find their unsub because he likely changed his name seeing the officer as an actual father figure who looked out for him.

6. Trying to escape

The victim, Greta, does her best to deal with what is happening, especially considering she thought she could get help from the person she thought should have saved her. She does manage to slip out of her bindings and hide, but isn’t able to hold off for long.

5. The story

The team figures out that the unsub must want something from his victims and because the women were found with remedies in their system for a sore throat, they deduce that he wants them to scream. Eventually, we find out that the unsub lost some items in a fire, including the recording of his mother’s death. It was his last memory of his mother and he has been trying to recreate it with his victims.

4. Shot

The police arrive at Peter’s house to save their victim and JJ is the first one to find the basement where they are. Before anyone can come, the unsub surprises her and attacks her, but JJ does her best to fight him off. However, when he knocks her to the ground, Kate arrives in time to shoot him after he asks JJ to “scream.” Once he’s down, she bites back, “You wish.”

3. JJ and Kate talk

JJ and Kate have a talk in the plane at the end, where they talk about Kate not being ready for Meg to go on a date. JJ is just happy that for now, her son thinks that girls are infested with cooties.

2. Chris embarrasses himself

We see Chris check on the girls at the mall and he is still under the impression that they are meeting two other boys. When he walks away, he calls Kate to give her an update and he begins telling her about a present he bought for her, which is apparently very sexy. He ends up embarrassing himself when another couple overhears him talking.

1. Not exactly what it seems

What Meg and her friend don’t realize is, the boy they think they are supposed to meet with, is actually an older unknown male. He is walking toward the girls when Chris shows up and then he later texts Meg about having a babysitter. This leads to Meg being upset, although in reality, she should be thankful.
