Two people have died following a shooting during a Mardi Gras parade in New Orleans Thursday night.

NOLA.com has reported that two people died while at the hospital. One victim, a 22-year-old man died after being shot in the neck and the second, a 21-year-old man, who was shot in the chest, died during surgery. The latter was identified as Peter Dabney. The other victim's name has not yet been released.

WWLTV reported that around 10 p.m. local time, while the Muses parade was going on, officers working the parade route heard gunfire and rushed to a nearby intersection. There, they found both of the wounded victims.

Amidst the chaos of spectators scrambling after hearing the gunshots as the parade continued, police gave chase and apprehended one suspect who fled the scene.

That man has been identified as John Hicks, 19, and police say he confessed to the crime.

He was taken to the Orleans Parish Jail and is currently being held on $1 million bail.

The parade is the city's traditional kickoff to Carnival weekend.
