When the proof-of-concept short The Leviathan hit the web, it caught quite a few amount of people's attention, including soon-to-be producers Simon Kinberg (X-Men: Days of Future Past) and Neill Blomkamp (Chappie). It also, it appears, garnered the attention of the heads of 20th Century Fox, as they agreed to host the production under their banner.

Variety reported on the film's update. The news is not necessarily surprising, as Fox signed a first-look deal with Kinberg and Blomkamp currently is hard at work with them on his re-imaginging of Alien. For lovers of original sci-fi, however, it's a blessing, especially as the short was really good.

It was only the beginning of this week when Kinberg and Blomkamp announced their involvement after The Leviathan's success as a 3 1/2 minute short on Vimeo and YouTube, where it got over 2 million views. This makes director Ruairi Robinson's second feature, after 2013's The Last Days on Mars.

Written by Jim Uhls (Fight Club), The Leviathan is an early 22nd century tale as mankind traveled to many world and mastered how to travel faster than the speed of light. As such, these humans harvest exotic eggs from the largest species in known existence.
