An Army helicopter crashed in Florida early Wednesday morning, leaving seven Marines and four soldiers missing. An Eglin Air Force Base spokesman said that there were human remains found.
Two UH-60 BlackHawk Army National Guard helicopters were taking part in a training exercise overnight, the base said in a statement. One of the helicopters was reported missing at 8:30 p.m. Tuesday night. Debris was discovered around 2 a.m. Wednesday morning.
According to the Associated Press, the Pentagon had initially said that all 11 service members on the helicopter were feared dead. However, Eglin spokesman Andy Bourland said that they are still considered “missing,” even though he did tell NBC News that, “We have found some human remains.”
The helicopter took off from Destin, Florida and crashed off the coast. The Eglin Air Force Base is located east of Pensacola.
The identities of the service members were not revealed. The seven Marines were assigned to Camp LeJeune in North Carolina.
There was fog in the area early Wednesday morning, but it’s not clear what the conditions were when the crash happened.
