Internet cat lovers now have the perfect location for a convention. A remote island in southern Japan is getting some extra attention this week, since cats outnumber humans there.
Cats first took over the mile-long island as a sort of mice exterminator army, since mice were ruining fisherman’s boats. Most of the humans who lived there left for the cities after world War II, notes Reuters.
In 1945, the island was home to 900 people, but now, most people only go there for quick weekend trips to “Cat Island.” Only 15 people still live there. There are no restaurants, shops or cars, so it’s not really an international tourist trap... yet.
USA Today notes that some have noticed a rise in tourism on the island. Back in January, The Japan Daily Press reported that the island was seeing a record number of tourists.
“I seldom carried tourists before, but now I carry tourists every week, even though the only thing we have to offer is cats,” ferry captain Nobuyuki Ninomiya said.
It sounds like they need a cat cafe there.
