The first photos from the set of Snowden have surfaced, thanks to the star of the film himself, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, who plays NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden.

Gordon-Levitt posted two photos on Facebook, one showing him looking super serious as Snowden in fatigues. A second image captures a more light-hearted moment, with JGL taking a selfie on the set. Director Oliver Stone is seen behind him, flashing a peace sign.

“Today's scenes felt like a really good way to start this shoot. It was hard, but of course, nowhere near as hard as real basic training,” Gordon-Levitt wrote on Facebook. “And me, I'm just honored and excited to be doing a soldier sequence with Oliver. I keep saying to myself: "f**k, this guy directed Platoon!"

Snowden will also star Nicholas Cage, Melissa Leo, Zachary Quinto, Tom Wilkinson and Rhys Ifans. Open Road gave the film an awards-friendly release date, putting the film out on Christmas Day.

The film is based on Luke Harding’s The Snowden Files: The Inside Story of the World’s Most Wanted Man and Time of the Octopus, a novel by Anatoly Kucherena, Snowden’s Russian lawyer.

Snowden leaked thousands of documents to the press, revealing the secret programs run by the National Security Agency. His story was also told in Laura Poitras’ CitizenFour, which earned the Oscar for Best Documentary Feature.
