The tiny island nation of Vanuatu was devastated by Cyclone Pam over the weekend and the county’s president is asking for immediate aid as thousands are left without food, clothing and shelter.

NBC News reported that the Category 5 tropical cyclone ripped through the island on Friday and Saturday leaving complete devastation in its aftermath.

Pam was the most powerful storm to ever make landfall in Vanuatu. At least six people are already confirmed dead and that number is expected to rise.

Vanuatu’s President Baldwin Lonsdale, has asked for aid from any other countries that can help as residents there try to deal with Pam’s destruction.

Lonsdale called the cyclone a “monster” in the damage it caused and how much it destroyed.

CNN noted that Aurelia Balpe of the Red Cross in the Pacific, echoed the president's thoughts.

"Homes have been lost, crops are destroyed. The damage is enormous, and people need our help," Balpe said. "Yet it will still take some time before we really understand the full extent of the damage."

Some aid has begun to come in, but it could be months before the Pacific archipelago island can rebuild and begin to feel any type of normalcy again.
