Comedic actor Jason Segel breaks into dramatic territory with The End of the Tour, the Sundnace hit and David Foster Wallace-biopic also starring Jesse Eisenberg, and fans now know when they can see his potentially Oscar-nominated work. A24 set the film for a limited release on July 31.
The release date news comes from Thompson on Hollywood, where the article stresses this release date is still good for its Oscar-chances. The extra time in the schedule is in hopes that The End of the Tour, which gained great reviews at Sundance, is in hopes that word-of-mouth can make this A24's first real Oscar contender. There's no word when it expands, if it plans to.
The studio acquired the film before its Sundance premiere for somewhere between $2-3 million. The End of the Tour follows Rolling Stone reporter David Lipsky (Eisenberg) who had a five-day interview with the reclusive author Wallace (Segel) in 1996 following his Infinite Jest success.
The End of the Tour is directed by James Ponsoldt, who also helmed The Spectacular Now which starred Miles Teller and Shailene Woodley. The film also stars Joan Cusack, Anna Chlumsky, Mamie Gummer and Mickey Sumner.
