One Oscar is not going to be enough for Eddie Redmayne. He is hoping to get back in the awards season game with The Danish Girl, which Universal’s Focus Features will release in November.
The studio has scheduled the Working Title film for a New York and Los Angeles debut on Nov. 27.
The drama is directed by Tom Hooper, who won an Oscar for The King’s Speech and helmed Universal’s Les Miserables in 2012. It is based on David Ebershoff’s book of the same name, which centers on the relationship between Danish painter Einar Wegener and his wife, Gerda. Einar became the first man to have sex-reassignment surgery and became known as Lili Elbe.
Alicia Vikander is set to play Gerda. Amber Heard, Ben Whishaw and Matthias Schoenaerts co-star. The script was written by Lucinda Coxon.
“In the tradition of Focus’ history of epic and moving love stories, The Danish Girl promises to be unforgettable,” Focus CEO Peter Schlessel said in a statement posted at TheWrap. “Tom Hooper is an extraordinary storyteller who always elicits beautiful performances from his actors. We are so pleased to be working with Eddie Redmayne again after our shared success with Working Title on The Theory of Everything.”
Focus and Working Title worked together in 2014 on The Theory of Everything, which starred Redmayne as Stephen Hawking and won him the Best Actor Oscar. Redmayne also worked with Hooper in Les Miserables.
Last week, Working Title announced that production has already started and shared a picture of Redmayne as Elbe.
