Director Josh Trank shared a few details about the upcoming reboot of the Fantastic Four franchise.
In an interview with Empire, Trank described the tone of the reboot as a "dark Amblin movie". Trank said that the film tries to capture the characters in a real world setting as much as possible.
"There's the opportunity to make something that is challenging and tragic and dramatic," adds Trank. "The opportunity is right there in the material. We'd rather steer it in that direction as opposed to just embracing a tone that comes right off the page."
The change in mood would seperate the reboot from 2005's Fantastic Four and 2007's Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer which were known for their humor and general campiness.
IGN reports that Trank also touched upon the controversy of casting black actor Michael B. Jordan in the role of Johhny Storm a.k.a. the Human Torch who is white in the comics. Trank said that after working with Jordan in the science fiction thriller Chronicle he knew he was right for the role because of the similarities in the characters. Trank added that he wanted the challenge of directing mixed siblings as the Human Torch is the brother of Susan Storm a.k.a. the Invisible Woman played by Kate Mara.
The Fantastic Four reboot is set to hit theatres on August 6.
