Indiana Gov. Mike Pence, who has faced criticism over the state’s controversial Religious Freedom Restoration Act, made statements Tuesday in an attempt to clarify the perceptions of the law.
USA Today reported that Pence defended the law and said he wants it amended to show that it does not give businesses the right to discriminate against anyone.
"This law does not give anyone the right to discriminate," Pence said during a news conference. "But I can appreciate that that has become the perception."
FoxNews.com noted that the governor signed the bill last week, which prohibits state laws that "substantially burden" a person's ability to follow his or her religious beliefs.
The law drew criticism from the LGBT community, as well as some corporations and was thought to be a black cloud looming over the men’s NCAA Final Four in Indianapolis this weekend. Therefore, Pence said that he needed to “fix” and clarify the bill that has been “mischaracterized.”
The Republican governor also admitted that he felt that he did not do a good job of explaining the law in the first place.
